Command Master Chief

Command Master Chief Gruber was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He entered Naval Service January 19, 2000, attending Recruit Training in Great Lakes, Illinois. He next completed Submarine School, Machinist Mate Auxiliary ‘A’, and ‘C’ schools in Groton, Connecticut.

In 2000, he reported to his first boat USS DALLAS (SSN 700) in Groton, Connecticut where he served as a member of Auxiliary Division and Dry Deck Shelter (DDS) Leading Petty Officer. During this tour, he completed two Mediterranean Deployments, and completed two Selective Restricted Availabilities.

In 2005, he served ashore Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) in Norfolk, Virginia where he served as the Assistant Leading Petty Officer and Lead Watertight Door and Hatch Technician in the Submarine Repair Department. During his tour, he trained Sailors in depot level maintenance and coordinated availabilities for 11 home ported submarines.

In 2008, he reported onboard USS OKLAHOMA CITY (SSN 723) in Norfolk, Virginia where he served as a member of Auxiliary Division and Assistant Quality Assurance Officer (AQAO). Shortly after reporting, he was selected to Chief Petty Officer in 2008. During his tour, he made a South Com Deployment and change of homeport to Portsmouth, New Hampshire for Engineering Overhaul (EOH) availability.

In 2009, he reported onboard USS SAN FRANCISCO (SSN 711) in Bremerton, Washington where he served as the Chief of Auxiliary Division and the 3M Coordinator. During his tour, he made a change of homeport to San Diego, California, made a West Pacific Deployment, and completed Pre-Inactivation Restricted Availability (PIRA).

In 2011, he served ashore Performance Monitoring Team (PMT) and Submarine Squadron ELEVEN in San Diego, California where he served as the Assistant Officer in Charge (AOIC) and the Damage Control Assistant (DCA). During his tour, he assumed at times Acting Command Master Chief (CMC), maintaining Auxiliary Division Readiness, and provided technical assistance for 6 home ported and visiting Submarines.

In 2013, he served onboard USS SAN FRANCISCO (SSN 711) in San Diego, California where he served as the Chief of the Boat. During his tour, made two extended West Pacific Deployments, he made a change of homeport to Norfolk, Virginia.

In 2017, he served onboard ARCO (ARDM 5) in San Diego, California where he served as the Command Master Chief. He was temporary assigned as the Chief of the Boat (COB) onboard USS ALEXANDRIA (SSN 757) for six months in San Diego, California. During his tour, docked and undocked multiple submarines to include the research vessel FLIP, IDPT, CRE, and pre-deployment certifications.

Command Master Chief Gruber’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (one award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (seven awards), Good Conduct Medal (six awards), and various campaign awards. He graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA) and the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course in September 2013. He has two sons Brendon and Brody.
