Cmdr. Darren Gerhardt

Commanding Officer, Blue Crew, USS Maine (SSBN 741)

CDR Darren Gerhardt was born in Royal Oak, Michigan and commissioned in 2001 at Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

In 2003, he reported to USS PITTSBURGH (SSN 720) following his initial nuclear power training. During this tour, he completed one SOUTHCOM deployment and the initial portion of an Engineered Overhaul in Portsmouth, NH, where he met his wife.

He served his department head tour aboard USS WYOMING (SSBN 742)(BLUE) as Weapons Officer from 2009 until 2012, completing four Strategic Deterrent Patrols and an Extended Refit Period in which the Combat Control System was entirely replaced.

From 2015 to 2017, he served as the Executive Officer aboard USS SCRANTON (SSN 756), during which the ship completed an Engineered Overhaul and a change of homeport to San Diego, CA.

His shore duty assignments include instructor duty at Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut; on the staff of the Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic, where he served as the Strategic Operations Department Head for the Atlantic SSBN Fleet; and on the Joint Staff as the Integrated Joint Special Technical Operations Chief for the J-39 Deputy Director for Global Operations.

CDR Gerhardt’s personal awards include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards).
