CDR Jonathan Scobo

Commanding Officer, USS Helena (SSN 725)

Commander Jon Scobo, hails from Stow, Massachusetts and is a 2005 graduate from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Design. He commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the College of the Holy Cross.

He completed nuclear propulsion training and the Submarine Officer's Basic Course prior to reporting to USS OHIO (SSGN 726)(GOLD) in Bangor, Washington in February of 2007. He served on board OHIO for three years as the Main Propulsion Assistant, Chemistry Radiological Controls Assistant, and the Assistant Weapons Officer. During his time on board, OHIO completed three Western Pacific Deployments earning the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Following sea duty, he reported to Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in February of 2010 where he earned a master’s degree in Acoustic Engineering in the Undersea Warfare Program.

Upon completion of the Submarine Officer's Advanced Course, he reported to USS BOISE (SSN 764) in December 2012 as the Navigator/Operations Officer. CDR Scobo completed a deployment to the Central Command Area of Responsibility where BOISE earned the Navy Unit Commendation.

He left the BOISE in May 2015 and served as the Operations Officer for Commander, Submarine Squadron SIX until June 2017. As the COMSUBRON SIX Operations Officer, he was responsible for the scheduling and deployment certification of ten fast attack submarines.

Upon completion of the Submarine Command Course, CDR Scobo reported to USS NEWPORT NEWS (SSN 750) as the Executive Officer in December 2017. During this tour CDR Scobo completed an extended deployment to the European Command Area of Responsibility.

He left NEWPORT NEWS in July 2019 and reported to Supreme Allied Command Transformation to serve as the Base Support Branch Head and Deputy Navy Liaison Officer. During this assignment, CDR Scobo earned a master’s in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.

Upon Completion of the Submarine Command Course, CDR Scobo reported to USS HELENA (SSN 725) as the Commanding Officer.

CDR Scobo is authorized to wear the Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and various unit awards.
