Cmdr. William Filip
Commanding Officer, Gold Crew, USS Alabama
Commander Filip, a native of Manchester, NH, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in the
year 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. Following his first sea tour, he attended the
Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a Master of Business Administration in Financial
Management.
At sea, his first submarine assignment was USS Maryland (SSBN 738)(Gold) in Kings Bay, GA where he
qualified in submarines and conducted five strategic deterrent patrols. As a department head, CDR Filip
served as Weapons Officer on USS Topeka (SSN 754) in San Diego, CA where he qualified for command
of submarines and completed two overseas deployments, one to the western Pacific and one to the
Persian Gulf. CDR Filip served as Executive Officer on USS Tucson (SSN 770) in Pearl Harbor, HI where he
completed a Western Pacific Deployment cycle.
His shore and staff assignments include a tour as Financial Officer for submarine construction and
modernization programs in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Financial Management and
Comptroller). CDR Filip also served as Programming Analyst for undersea warfare, the naval nuclear
enterprise, and aircraft carrier construction and modernization for the Programming Division, Office of
the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N80).
In addition to various unit citations, CDR Filip’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service
Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps
Achievement Medal (two awards).
