CDR Lester "JR" Patterson, Jr.

Commanding Officer, USS Louisiana (SSBN 743)

Commander Lester “JR” Patterson, a native of Gooding, Idaho, received his commission from the University of Idaho in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.  He also holds a Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College.

Following commissioning and initial nuclear training, Commander Patterson reported to the USS Helena (SSN 725) where he served as the Assistant Weapons Officer, Main Propulsion Assistant, and Communicator.  In his next operational tour he served as the Strategic Weapons Officer aboard the USS Nebraska (Gold) (SSBN 739).  His most recent submarine assignment was as the Executive Officer of the USS Florida (Gold) (SSGN 728).

His shore and staff assignments include Anti-Submarine Warfare and Exercise Officer for Commander Destroyer Squadron 50 in Bahrain; Force Strategic Weapons Officer for Commander Submarine Forces U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and Submarine Investment Financial Management Analyst for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Financial Management and Budget.

His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and other various unit and campaign commendations.
