Commander Jason Chuma

Commanding Officer, Gold Crew, USS Kentucky

CDR Jason H. Chuma is a native of Merrittstown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, in 2007 and was commissioned into the Navy via the NROTC program. Following commissioning, CDR Chuma completed studies in nuclear power for service as a submarine officer.

CDR Chuma has served at sea as a division officer onboard USS NEWPORT NEWS (SSN 750) homeported in Norfolk, VA, as Navigator and Operations Officer onboard USS SPRINGFIELD (SSN 761) homeported in Groton, CT, and as Executive Officer onboard USS HENRY M. JACKSON (SSBN 730G) homeported in Bangor, WA. His deployment experience spans operations in the Eastern Pacific, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and North Atlantic.

Ashore, CDR Chuma has served as a future concepts writer on the staff of Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC), as the Operations Officer for Submarine Squadron 6 in Norfolk, VA, and as the Military Assistant to the Department of Defense Executive Secretary in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

CDR Chuma holds a Bachelors in physics from the Citadel and a Masters in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University. He has had the privilege of serving on teams who have been awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Battle Efficiency “E”, Omaha Trophy, and the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award.
