Commander James Flaherty
Executive Officer

CDR Flaherty is a native of Roseville, CA and joined in July 1996 as a Navigation Electronics Technician where he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was commissioned in February 2007 through the Limited Duty Officer Program specializing in Submarine Electronics. He graduated from University of Maryland University College in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. In addition, he has several associate degrees and completed Acquisition Test and Evaluation level two certification while assigned to Commander Operational Test and Evaluation (COMOPTEVFOR).
His operational enlisted tours include two Western Pacific deployments on USS Salt Lake City SSN 716. Multiple Strategic Deterrent Patrols on USS Rhode Island SSBN 740 to include three years as the Assistant Navigator. Commissioned tours include Electrical Officer and Training Officer on USS Frank Cable AS 40; Officer in Charge (OIC) of a Tactical Document Media Exploitation (TACDOMEX) Team, Afghanistan; Operations Officer on USS Emory S Land AS 39; OIC for Submarine Development Squadron Five, Detachment Undersea Research and Development (UR&D), permanently embarked on USS Jimmy Carter SSN 23, to include three operational periods.
His shore duty assignments include Port Operations Officer, Naval Base Guam; Division Officer in Weapons Repair Department, Trident Refit Facility Kings Bay; Foreign Military Sales Case Manager, Iraq; Electronic Material Officer, Commander Submarine Force Atlantic; Code 44 Section Head, Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force.
CDR Flaherty is authorized to wear Officer and Enlisted Submarine Warfare, Surface Warfare Officer, Fleet Marine Force and Deep Submergence Insignia. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), the Meritorious Service Medal(2nd Award), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6th Award), the Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal (4th Award).
