CAPT Michael Thompson

Commanding Officer

Captain Mike Thompson is a native of Midlothian, Texas. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1988 as part of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. In April 1990, he graduated from Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) Idaho Falls. He holds a Bachelor of Science with honors from Liberty University and a Master’s in Business Administration (Financial Management specialization) from NorthCentral University. He was commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer in March 1999.

He earned his submarine silver dolphins while serving on USS Bremerton (SSN 698). He also served as a training instructor with Staff Training Group at Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) on MTS-635.

Captain Thompson completed deployments on submarines and aircraft carriers to the 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th Fleets. His At sea assignments include Outside Machinery Repair Officer and Assistant Repair Officer aboard submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40); Reactor Mechanical Technical Assistant and Quality Assurance Officer aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76); Reactor Controls Assistant aboard PCU North Carolina (SSN 777); Reactor Mechanical Assistant aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71); and Chief Engineer aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) where the ship earned three Damage Control Red ‘DC’, three Maintenance Purple ‘E’ awards and the Battle ‘E’ Efficiency award.

Ashore, he served as Production Management Assistant at Trident Refit Facility Kings Bay and as Intermediate Level Maintenance Readiness and Improvements Officer for Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic. Captain Thompson commanded floating dry dock ARCO (ARDM 5), from 2012 to 2014 where the crew earned back-to-back Battle ‘E’ Awards, the retention excellence award and several departmental awards. He served as Deputy Commander of Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility from March 2021 to May 2023.

Captain Thompson’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards) and various unit commendations and service awards.
