
CDR William Murphy
Commanding Officer, USS Columbia
Commander Murphy is a native of Bethel, Maine and a 2007 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering. He earned a master’s degree from Naval Postgraduate School in Engineering Acoustics.
At sea, he served as a division officer onboard USS Boise (SSN 764) where he completed two European deployments, Engineer Officer onboard USS Nevada (SSBN 733) (BLUE) where he completed five Strategic Deterrence Patrols, and Executive Officer onboard USS Texas (SSN 775).
Ashore, CDR Murphy served as an instructor of physics at the United States Naval Academy, a junior board member on the Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board of United States Pacific Fleet, and commanding officer of Moored Training Ship 711 at Nuclear Power Training Unit, Charleston.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He was a member of outstanding teams that have earned three Battle Efficiency “E” awards and various unit awards.
