Commander Thomas Newman
Commanding Officer

CDR Newman is a native of Meridian, Mississippi and enlisted in the Navy in 1998 as an Aerographer’s Mate (AG). He was selected to the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 2005 and was commissioned under the Limited Duty Officer program in 2007 as a Meteorology and Oceanography officer. He now serves as a member of the Navy’s Information Warfare Community.
At sea, he served aboard USS Typhoon (PC 5), USS Trenton (LPD 14), and USS Tarawa (LHA 1) completing multiple deployments in support of Joint and Coalition operations in the European, Central, and Pacific theaters. He also deployed aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) as Staff Oceanographer to Commander, Carrier Strike Group 11.
Ashore, CDR Newman has served as the Director of Training at the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Professional Development Center; Current Operations Officer (N31) for Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command; Aide to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare and Director of Naval Intelligence; Warfare Tactics Instructor at the Naval Information Warfighting Development Center; and as Force Oceanographer and Deputy Director for Intelligence to Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
In addition to graduating from Auburn University with a degree in Political Science, he holds a Master of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School and is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Army War College with a Master of Strategic Studies.
Commander Newman reported as Executive Officer of Theater Undersea Surveillance Command, Pacific in June of 2024.
He is the recipient of various personal, unit, and campaign awards including the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (6 awards), and Navy Achievement Medal (5 awards).
