Commander Sean Stein
Commanding Officer
Commander Sean Stein, a native of Hackensack, NJ, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He earned an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Naval Post Graduate School, a Master of Engineering Management from Old Dominion University, and is a Graduate with Distinction from the United States Naval War College where he earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.
Following initial nuclear power training, CDR Stein began his career as a Submarine Officer on USS Providence (SSN 719), completing a deployment to the Western Pacific. As a Department Head he served as Engineer Officer on USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720), completing two deployments to the European and Central Command areas of operations. Additionally, CDR Stein served on the Pre-Commissioning Unit Colorado (SSN 788) as the first Navigator and Operations Officer and was responsible for establishing the ship’s Navigation and Weapons Departments.
Ashore, CDR Stein served at Naval Reactors Headquarters, as Officer In Charge of the Submarine Surveillance Equipment Program Pacific, on the staff of the Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy in the Integration Support Directorate's Technology Studies Group, and on the Joint Staff in the J5 Deputy Directorate for Joint Strategic Planning as an Action Officer and later as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director for Joint Strategic Planning.
Commander Stein reported as Executive Officer of Theater Undersea Surveillance Command, Pacific in June of 2023 and relieved as Commanding Officer in July 2024.
CDR Stein’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (4 awards), and several other unit and service awards.
