USS Florida Moors Alongside USS Emory S. Land in Diego Garcia

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Michael Doan, USS Emory S. Land Public Affairs

DIEGO GARCIA, British Indian Ocean Territory (Jan. 7, 2016) – Guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) arrived in Diego Garcia to moor alongside the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) Jan. 7.

Florida will swap their “Gold Crew” for their “Blue Crew” while Emory S. Land provides hotel services to both and serves as their Lead Maintenance Activity (LMA) to fulfill a continuous maintenance activity (CMAV) requirement.

“The Land is operating off a condensed schedule to fit 40 days of work into the time period of the Florida’s visit,” said Information Systems Technician 1st Class Lorenzo Miller, the ship’s superintendent who is the liaison between Land’s Repair Department and tended units.

CMAVs are an integral part of lifecycle maintenance, which maximizes a unit’s operational availability. Land is one of the few ships that can accomplish a CMAV. Submarine tenders provide the versatility of meeting tended units at overseas locations without the ship or submarine going to a shore facility.

Emory S. Land is a forward deployed expeditionary submarine tender on an extended deployment conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations.
