COMMANDER, SUBMARINE DEVELOPMENT SQUADRON FIVE

DEVRON FIVE is based in Bangor, Washington, and is charged with multiple submarine warfare mission areas, to include submarine rescue operations and the activities of its three SEAWOLF-class submarines.  DEVRON FIVE is responsible for developing and testing new submarine warfare capabilities, including the use of unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs).

Deep Submergence Unit, based in San Diego, CA, reports to DEVRON FIVE and is responsible for developing and maintaining the U.S. Navy's submarine rescue capabilities.  DSU exercises submarine rescue capabilities with our international partners through programs such as ISMERLO and the Asia Pacific Submarine Conference, which met last month in Singapore.  After 31 years faithful service, DSU's DSRV was retired last October and replaced by the next generation submarine rescue system, the Submarine Rescue Diving and Recompression System's (SRDRS) Rescue Capable System (RCS).

DEVRON FIVE is home to three SEAWOLF-class attack submarines, USS Seawolf (SSN 21), USS Connecticut (SSN 22), and USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23).  The subs are exceptionally quiet, fast, well armed, and equipped with advanced sensors.  Though lacking Vertical Launch Systems, the Seawolf class has eight torpedo tubes, which can also fire Tomahawks, and can hold up to 50 weapons in its torpedo room. The third ship of the class, USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23), has a 100-foot hull extension called the multi-mission platform. This hull section provides for additional payload to accommodate advanced technology used to carry out classified research and development and for enhanced warfighting capabilities.
