Captain Ravi Desai

Commanding Officer, Gold Crew, USS Michigan (SSGN 727)

CAPT Ravi Desai, a native of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, attended Lehigh University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Bachelor of Arts in Religion Studies. After graduation, he attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida and received his commission in April of 1999.

Upon completion of the nuclear training pipeline, he reported to USS Dallas (SSN 700) for duty. During his junior officer tour, he served in various assignments and conducted a Mediterranean Deployment in 2002. After completing his tour onboard Dallas, he reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel (PERS-42) located in Millington, TN as a Junior Officer Detailer. During this tour, he earned a Master of Science in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas.

After graduating the Submarine Officer Advanced Course, CAPT Desai relieved as the Engineer Officer on USS Providence (SSN719). During his tour, the ship completed to deployments to the western Pacific and a drydocking selected restricted availability. Following his Engineer tour, he was assigned to the Pacific Fleet Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board as a Junior Board Member. During this tour, CAPT Desai completed more than 50 inspections on submarines, aircraft carriers, and training facilities.

CAPT Desai served as the Executive Officer of USS Alabama Gold (SSBN 731G) in Bangor, Washington between 2012 and 2014 where he conducted three strategic deterrent patrols in support of Operation Global Citadel. Following his Executive Officer tour, CAPT Desai served as the Officer in Charge, Moored Training Ship (MTS) 626 in Charleston, SC.

After completing his tour on MTS-626, CAPT Desai commanded USS San Juan (SSN 751). During his tour, the Panthers on the Prowl completed a deployment to the European Command AOR, a surge deployment in the Northern Command AOR in support of Theater ASW and a drydocking selected restricted availability. After completing his command tour, CAPT Desai was assigned as the Deputy for Operations on the staff of Commander, Submarine Squadron Twelve. During his tenure, CSS-12 submarines conducted forward deployed operations and national tasking in the Pacific, European and Northern Command AORs.
