Commander Robert J. Lopez is a native of Steger, Illinois where he enlisted in the Navy in August 1986. Following Basic Enlisted Submarine School and Electronics Technician “A” and “C” schools, he reported onboard USS PASADENA (SSN 752), home ported in Groton CT as a Navigation Electronics Technician where he earned his silver dolphins in December 1989. His follow-on tours of duty were onboard USS BOISE (SSN-764), USS EMORY S. LAND (AS-39) and lastly, at Submarine Squadron Eight where he was selected for commissioning.

In September, 1999, he was commissioned as an Ensign under the Limited Duty Officer Program and subsequently reported to USS EMORY S. LAND in La Maddalena, Italy as the Electrical Officer and the R-3 & R-4 Division Officer. During this tour he qualified Surface Warfare Officer and was selected as the Atlantic Fleet Junior Officer of the Year. His next assignment was at Naval Ordinance Test Unit in Port Canaveral, FL as the scheduling officer in 2002.

In 2004, Commander Lopez reported to Submarine Squadron Fifteen as the Electronic Material Officer managing repairs and modernizations for three home ported submarines and a submarine tender in Guam. In 2007, he reported onboard USS FRANK CABLE (AS-40) as the Operations Officer.

In 2009, Commander Lopez’s next tour was as Weapons Production Assistant, Trident Refit Facility, Kings Bay, GA., where he oversaw and managed the industrial support for incremental overhaul and repair of TRIDENT submarines and the depot level overhaul of equipment. He earned his Bachelors Degree during this tour from Southern Illinois University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. In 2011, he reported to Naval Research Laboratory in Port Hueneme, CA as the Assistant Officer in Charge. During this tour, he earned his Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership.

In 2014, he reported as the Officer in Charge of AUTEC. AUTEC provides instrumented operational areas in a real world environment to satisfy research, development, test and evaluation requirements and operational performance assessment of war fighter readiness in support of the full spectrum of maritime warfare.
