Capt. Aaron Peterson

Captain Aaron Peterson earned his commission through the Navy ROTC program at Iowa State University and hails from Scotland, South Dakota. He holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University and a MS in Chemical Engineering from Tulane University.

CAPT Peterson commanded USS Scranton (SSN 756) in San Diego where he led his crew through a transition from a shipyard overhaul to a forward deployed submarine in the Western Pacific.

CAPT Peterson completed six deployments on submarines prior to taking command, covering all areas of submarine operations. He served as the Executive Officer of USS La Jolla (SSN 701), Engineer Officer of USS Georgia - Blue (SSGN 729), and as a Division Officer on USS Springfield (SSN 761), earning two Battle Efficiency E awards and one Arleigh Burke fleet trophy.

CAPT Peterson’s most recent assignment was as the Senior Board Member for the Pacific Fleet Commander’s Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, evaluating and mentoring Commanding Officers of nuclear powered warships in the Pacific Fleet. Before reporting to Pacific Fleet, he served as the Deputy Commander for Training and Operations at Submarine Squadron ONE, where he and his team trained and deployed eight submarines. While at Squadron ONE, he took command of USS Illinois (SSN 786) for two months while the ship prepared to deploy. He previously served as the Navy Special Programs Officer for Joint Chiefs of Staff, Director of Intelligence (J2). He was the Submarine Group Eight Engineer and Task Force Six-Nine Strike Liaison Officer, overseeing the first tended SSGN upkeep in Diego Garcia while also supporting submarine strike operations for Operation ODYSSEY DAWN in Libya. He also served as the Submarine warfare advisor at Tulane University NROTC during Hurricane Katrina.

His personal awards include the Legion of Merit (two awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), and the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards). CAPT Peterson was named Submarine Group Two's Junior Officer of the Year, 2004 and has published research in the academic journal, Applied Surface Science.
