CDR James Tuthill

Commanding Officer, USS Annapolis SSN 760

Commander James Tuthill, a native of Chicago, Illinois, graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a major in History and a minor in French. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

Tuthill’s sea duty assignments include executive officer on USS Nevada (BLUE) (SSBN 733), engineer officer on USS Virginia (SSN 774), and division officer on USS Topeka (SSN 754). During his seagoing career, he has made numerous deployments in the Western Pacific and Eastern Pacific, Western Atlantic, and completed arctic certification. While on USS Virginia (SSN 774) the ship performed the first VIRGINIA-class overhaul.

His ashore tours include instructor at Nuclear Power School where he taught propulsion plant operations, engineer officer for Commander, Submarine Squadron One, Chief of Staff and theater nuclear power officer to Commander, Submarine Group Eight.

His military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various other campaign, unit, and personal awards, including the Naval Submarine League VADM Charles A. Lockwood Award for professional excellence.
