Commander Brett Fillmore
Commanding Officer

Commander Fillmore was raised in Warren, Ohio and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in History. 

Following initial Submarine training, he was assigned to USS PORTSMOUTH (SSN 707), where he completed two western Pacific deployments, serving as Chemistry/Radiological Controls Assistant, Damage Control Assistant, and Main Propulsion Assistant.  USS PORTSMOUTH (SSN 707) earned two Meritorious Unit Commendations as well as Battle Efficiency “E”s in 1994 and 1996.

Following a course of study at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where he earned a Masters Degree in Financial Management, he served as Strategic Weapons Officer aboard USS FLORIDA (SSBN 728)(GOLD).  During his tour, USS FLORIDA (SSBN 728) (GOLD) completed five strategic deterrent patrols and earned the 2000 COMSUBRON SEVENTEEN Battle Efficiency “E” and Strategic “S”.  Additionally, the ship earned the Omaha Trophy in 2000, awarded to the fleet’s top ballistic missile submarine.

His next assignment began in August 2001 as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence and Special Operations for Commander, Submarine Group EIGHT and Commander Task Force SIX NINE in Naples, Italy.  He worked extensively with surge-deployed submarines during Operation Iraqi Freedom, helping the staff earn a Navy Unit Commendation. 

In February 2004, he reported as Executive Officer of USS WEST VIRGINIA (SSBN 736)(BLUE), leading the ship through an extended refit period, two strategic deterrent patrols, and earning the 2005 COMSUBRON TWENTY Battle Efficiency “E”.  The ship also earned the 2005 Kings Bay Navy League’s “Best Trident” award. 

In December 2005, he reported to the staff of COMSUBPAC as Executive Officer of the Tactical Readiness Evaluation (TRE) team, completing over 20 TREs and assisting in the development of fleet tactical and training doctrine.  His previous assignment was as the Deputy Commander for Readiness for Submarine Squadron SEVEN. 

Commander Fillmore’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards).  He is an avid outrigger canoe paddler, and competes in competitions across Hawaii and beyond.
