Frank Cable Sailors Volunteer at Portland Meals on Wheels

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Allen Michael McNair, USS Frank Cable Public Affairs

PORTLAND, Ore. (June 24, 2017) - Approximately 20 Sailors from the submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) volunteered at Meals on Wheels resource center in Portland, Ore. June 23.

This is the first time that a group from the U.S. Armed Forces has volunteered at the center in Portland.

The Sailors worked in the kitchen to help prepare food, package the meals, clean dishes and any other tasks that was needed to assist the employees that day. Hull Technician 1st Class Antuan Mills said working in the kitchen was both fun and intriguing.

“It makes me feel real good knowing that my contributions are going to those in need,” said Mills.

Katie Ellis, manager of human resources and volunteer services, said the assistance they receive from volunteers is a huge part of the daily production and delivery process. The facility of about 130 staff members are supported by about 500 volunteers each day.

The Portland area Meals on Wheels organization feeds more than 17,000 seniors a year and has about 30 locations across three counties. The main facility prepares nearly 6,000 meals a day for women and men ages 60 and up, who are in need of assistance.

The Frank Cable religious ministries department is working to set up another volunteer opportunity with Meals on Wheels in the future so the Sailors can assist in meal deliveries.

Frank Cable, currently in Portland, Ore., for a scheduled dry-dock maintenance availability, is home-ported in Guam and conducts maintenance and support of submarines and surface vessels deployed in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
